Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), are not just core beliefs at HNI – they are operational imperatives. We value each other’s differences in experiences and ideas to solve problems and better serve our customers. Our member-owner culture is built on empowerment and accountability for all, and we are working to establish the resources and structures needed to support an equitable and inclusive workplace.

HNI Belong is a broad-ranging initiative based on listening to our members and further building our HNI community for everyone, where members can perform to their full potential.

HNI Belong integrates inclusiveness in our business by recognizing, utilizing, and celebrating our members’ unique characteristics and talents. We believe getting to the place of belonging, where all members can contribute their best, is one of the ultimate goals of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Our comprehensive framework focuses on three key areas

We expect our leaders to build diverse talent, contribute to achieving goals, and be stewards of our diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Diverse backgrounds support the foundation of our culture by bringing unique perspectives together.

We believe in creating a community for everyone where all members feel welcome and valued.

Our Goals

We are committed to achieving our goals and enhancing the diversity of our leadership teams. Tracking our progress keeps us focused and accountable. To further drive the success of our business, we set goals to increase the number of women leaders and ethnically diverse leaders.

Leadership Diversity Graph

By 2026, we aim to increase diversity in our leadership. To further drive the success of our business, we have set goals to increase the number of women leaders to 40% and ethnically diverse leaders to 15%.

Recruiting Diverse Talent

In recent years, we have worked with Women in Business, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers, and many more to help us recruit the next generation of top talent.

Supporting Women in STEM

In 2019, we launched our Women in STEM program, designed to empower and support women to achieve their full potential in engineering and technical careers. The program provides valuable networking opportunities, connecting members at all levels of the organization.

Supporting Our Members

In 2020, we began a series of focus groups to better understand the needs of our members and with this data in hand, we are working to establish the resources and structures needed to support an equitable and inclusive workplace.
